About
On December 21, 1975, the world was in shock. Six terrorists led by Carlos 'The Jackal' forced their way into the conference room of the OPEC headquarters in Vienna and took seventy ministers hostage. During the gun battle with the police that ensued three people were killed. One terrorist was seriously wounded. The terrorists managed to escape to Algiers with their wounded partner: Hans-Joachim Klein.
This film shows how the personal events in the life of an individual can lead to radicalism and terrorism. Director Alexander Oey reconstructs Klein's life and films his daily existance in the Normandy countryside while Klein looks back on the life he has led and the choices he's made.
The exclusive bonus footage consists of seven scenes that did not make it to the final cut of the documentary. These are fascinating interview clips: Klein talks about his arrest, about the days before the attack, and about his time in prison. But we also see Klein meet with his judge and there?s the impressive scene of Klein visiting Ravensbruck, where his mother was imprisoned during World War II.
This is what the press wrote
As a portrait of a converted brute, it is a marvelous film.
-- NRC Handelsblad, newspaper
A moving portrait and at the same time, a carefully constructed image of an era. In a subtle manner, it makes clear how thin the dividing line was between activists like Daniël-Cohn Bendit and Joschka Fischer on one hand and a radicalized hanger-on like Klein on the other.
-- De Volkskrant, newspaper
Klein (1947) who hadn't previously spoken so extensively on television, now frankly admits that it was a terrorist act, but he didn't know at the time that the whole thing was set up by Libyan leader Gaddafi in order to raise the price of oil.
